First things first...
Safety
- Always be cognizant of your periphery. Don't smack into other players, stationary objects, pets, wildlife, or innocent passers-by. Actually, go ahead and smack passers-by. Folks shouldn't be walking through the middle of a group of people running and turning unpredictably while staring at their phones. That's on them. Unless, of course, you unwisely chose a place where people have no option but to walk through. That would be on you. And your friends.
- Choose a playfield with lots of level, open space. Having obstacles on the playfield might sound like fun, but when you trip over one, it will suddenly sound like a lot less much of fun.
- Avoid places with lots of traffic, whether foot traffic or otherwise. (See the first point.)
- Do not play near steep places or dropoffs. Or streets. Or spillways. Or alligators.
- Please, please, PLEASE... Do not play this game in any type of vehicle. (I know some of you will try this, but I hereby officially declare myself not responsible for the results.)
What does "Like We're the People" mean?
When I was young, the other neighborhood kids and I spent a lot of time pretending to be the characters in our favorite merchandised television properties. There were two ways to do this:
- "With the Figures" - Meaning between the lot of us, we had a collection of action figures and could sit in the driveway or someone's living room and fight over who got to play with the Boss of the Good Guys.
- "Like We're the People" - Meaning we either did not have an action figure collection or we had a collection of broken action figures, and instead ran around the driveway and fought over who got to pretend to be the Boss of the Good Guys. We were not allowed to do this in anyone's living room.
Therefore, "Snakes Like We're the People" is the classic computer game "Snakes" played by running around in someone's driveway. (Or more likely, a large yard or a park.)
Instructions
It's easy:
- Find a large, level, clear playfield. (See "Safety" above.)
- Go to one corner of that playfield and click the "Start a Game" link above.
- Enter your name and click the "Ready!" button.
- Run to the other corner of the playfield to stretch out its dimensions.

- Each square on the board is about 7 meters wide and long in real life.
- You'll be able to go a maximum of 15 squares (approximately 105 meters) in each direction from the center.
- If you exceed that, you'll get an "Out of bounds" message. Just bring it back in a bit.
- When you're in position, tap the message overlay, and a countdown will begin.
- When it hits zero, START RUNNING.
- Gameplay:

- The game will use your GPS position to maneuver your snake. Just like in the classic game, you lose if you leave the playfield or run into your own or another player's snake.
- The playfield does not rotate as you play. North is up, west is left, south is down, and east is right at all times.
- Unlike the classic game, you can stand still. But don't do it for very long. A time-delayed "fuse" will start to burn from the tail of your snake and follow you. If it catches up to you, you lose.
- Also based on a time delay, your tail will gradually disappear to manage your snake's length.
- Periodically, a fruit will appear. It's an orange square, but it tastes good and will nourish your snake. If you capture the fruit, your snake's length will increase. Because it's nourished.
- Survive as long as you can and increase your score. You will receive 100 points for each fruit you obtain.
